We've been living in our camper trailer since June, 2019. That's more than eight months, as of writing this post. Since then we have learned a lot. Such as how much nature wants to kill us. We've had cold, we've had mold, we've had rain and snow and ice. But that's all for other posts.
We spent over $60,000 on our truck and trailer. The loans are expensive. We make it work, but we often ask ourselves if we should have gone with a diesel pusher instead. A small used car is a heck of a lot cheaper to fuel, maintain and repair than the truck. The trailer has entire setup and takedown procedures, so we can't just take a break in a rest stop for the night. We must pay for something no matter what; even though we are pretty quick at it, it is more than an inconvenience. Given how much we spent, we often find ourselves wondering if going with the motorhome would have been wiser. It certainly would have given us more freedom.
Just a few days ago, we were even saying to each other that if we could go back we would probably have gone with the motorhome over the trailer. But then I wrote the last post going through the pros and cons and we remembered why we picked the travel trailer. Despite its flaws, the cons on the motorhome would have been significant challenges.
The Glitz and Glammers on YouTube constantly change out their RVs, usually at least once per year. They always end up finding some sort of problem and buy something different to fix it, only for the different RV to come with a different problem. Breakdown risks, size and layout heavily outweigh the advantages of motorhomes for a family. But the grass is always greener on the other side. The perfect RV probably doesn't exist, especially not when you have a low budget like we do.
Oh. Nevermind. The perfect fifth wheel just pulled into the park we're in. Two bedrooms, the right size, lots of slide outs... but perfection costs money and we're broke. Not broke broke, but payments have to be made. Unlike many others, we didn't sell a house and buy an RV outright. We have loan payments and can't just buy and sell as we please.
If we did it all again, we would still go with our current travel trailer. It was a good idea. We planned well, despite the lack of storage. Other than a few lights going out, we've had few real problems.
Besides the mold... And the cold... And the humidity... And the wind... And the debris that the wind knocks onto the trailer...
Mother Nature really wants to kill us...
